Online Database ChoicePoint Online Purchases Rival Criminal Records Database Rapsheets.com

Update, June 1, 2007: Since its purchase by ChoicePoint, Rapsheets can now be found at http://www.knowx.com/rapsheets/

ChoicePoint Online has announced that it has acquired the Memphis, TN-based Investigation Technologies, LLC, which operates the Rapsheets Criminal Records database.

Rapsheets has grown since its founding in 1997 from providing data only in the greater-Memphis area, to covering information from 30 states when we first reported on the company in 2001 to now spanning "almost every state in the U.S. and includes searches at the county, state and regional and national level," according to the Rapsheets Web site.

"ChoicePoint is very pleased to acquire Rapsheets' sophisticated database technology, diverse customer base and growing sales force," said ChoicePoint's executive vice president David T. Lee in a press release announcing the deal. "The combination of our respective databases and technologies will set a new standard for criminal records solutions."

"We are delighted to join the growing ChoicePoint team," added Peter Schutt, chief executive officer of Rapsheets. "This alliance creates a powerful tool to help our clients employ the positive power of criminal records information to stay smart, safe and secure."

The management team and approximately 50 employees of Rapsheets are expected to remain with ChoicePoint and continue to operate out of its facility in Memphis, according to the Choicepoint announcement.
