Payphone Installed in New York Test
|
- New York city-based
telecommunications company TCC Teleplex has installed
Manhattan's first web-enabled payphone as part of
a 30 day test. For 25 cents per minute, users can
send e-mail or surf the web.
-
- Like a conventional
payphone, it has a handset, coin slot and number
keypad for dialing. In addition, the phone's
bright yellow case also holds a 12 inch video
screen, a black keyboard, a credit card slot and
a digital camera to include photos in e-mails
being sent. For speedy Internet access, the phone
boasts a DSL connection. The phone also features
a red "panic" button that instantly
connects the users with New York's 911 emergency
service.
-
- The phone will
remain at the southwest corner of West 46th
Street off Fifth Avenue until mid-March.
