California, Hawaii, Kansas & Virginia Recoup Nearly $1 Billion

Fairfax, VA-based American Management Systems has developed a software-based system that helps state governments locate and collect delinquent tax payments. The system combs through existing state databases to identify taxpayers who should be filing tax returns - but are not.

Since adopting the AMS system, four states have collected $912 million that had not been marked for collection. "Optimizing debt collection and improving the tax system itself is an invaluable, often untapped source of significant and enduring new revenue for states," said Donna Morea, executive vice president and general manager of AMS's Public Sector practice.

California alone recovered $300 million, while Virginia recovered $35 million.
