In our live seminars, we talk a lot about the ways Web sites in general, and search engines in particular, are able to customize the informaiton you see based on numerous factors, including your location (as detected by you Internet conneciton), your IP (Internet Protocol) Address, previous web history, among others. One remedy we we suggest to minimize some of this customization is to start an Incognito or Private browsing session (different browsers refer to the process by different names) to hide some of that information from the sites you visit.

A German company, eBlocker, is showing an eponymous new product/service here at CES that blocks even more of that information to, "blocks all ads, stops all trackers, hide[s] your IP – and lets you surf truly anonymously – on ALL your devices." The company offers two versons of the service - eBlocker Pro and eBlocker Family. Despite their names, Pro is meant for individual users. Family offers support up to 10 simultaneous users. A company representative said that there are plans for an Enterprise version with enough multi-user support to satisfy larger firms.

The device itself is plug and play, requiring no software installation or configuration.

The company will just be launching its Kickstarter campaign on January 20. You can also pre-order the device now, at a 50% discount, on their Web site. The eBlocker Pro Pro is available for pre-order for $99 ($199 after launch) and Family is available for $129 ($249 after launch).

Once you purchase the device, the Pro version comes with one year of software updates included, with additional years available at $49.00. The Family version comes with lifetime updates - "either yours or ours," joked a company representative. On a more serious note, the representative noted that their software is often updated daily to keep up with the changes in ad tracking technology. Without the update subscription device owners can still download and install the updates manually for free...if they remember to do it.

For the more ambitious of you out there, the eBlocker software is currently available as a free download that runs on a Raspberry Pi or Banana Pi computer.

Because battery life has always plagued cell phones, I've had an external battery pack for my smartphone almost as long as I've had a smartphone. I started with a slide-on battery for my iPhone 3, moved on to protective cases with integrated batteries for my iPhone 4, and when those (two of them) stopped working I moved to a power bank (aka a brick) with enough power to charge my phone more than twicce or my iPad a little more than 1.5 times, or any other device that has a charging cable with a USB connector on one end. Now, external chargers are being offered in many different shapes and sizes. These are some of the more interesting ones I saw at CES this year.

Ampy Move

The Ampy move is billed as, "the world's first motion-charger". It converts the kinetic energy generated by your own movement to charge a the Move's battery. A USB connector on the device allows you to charge any other device that uses a USB charging cable. The Move can also be charged by plugging into a wall outlet. The company claims that one hour of exercise translates into five hours of standby time.

There is also a companion app (free) that helps you track the calories you've burned while charging the battery.

Ampy's Move is available for $99.00 from their own website. An accessory pack that also includes an arm/leg band and holster/clamp to help you wear the device while you are moving/generating charge on the device is available for an additional $30.

AmpWare

AmpWare's crank case offers a different take on user-generated charge with a protective case that has an integrated crank/generator that is turned to charge the phone. Another departure for their case/charger is that in order to keep the weight down, the AmpWare case does not contain a battery. The crank/generator charges the phone's own battery directly. The company claims that 5 minutes of cranking yields up to one hour of use or up to five hours of standby time.

The AmpWare case is available for pre-order at the company's site (for delivery in March 2016) for $79.00.

CulCharge

The CulCharge power bank is a little more traditional-type power bank in that it has an integrated battery that is charged via USB and a wall outlet. Its small size is the first thing that sets it apart. It weighs in at only 1.3 ounces (38 grams). The second is that because the charging connector is integrated into the device, you have to slect either the iOS or Android version when you buy it.CulCharge can also serve as a data transfer cable to connect your phone to your computer. Its 1000maH battery will charge an iPhone 6 a little more than one full charge.

The CulCharge is designed to be added to your keychain so it's something you can always carry and have available when you need it. So are USB drives though, and I can't remember the last time I saw anyone carry one on their keychain. To further incentivize adding the device to your keychain, CulCharge also incudes a flashlight.

The CulCharge is available for purchase from the company's webite in iOS ($39.99) and Android ($32.99) versions.

One of the most remarkable new devices coming out of CES so far is Movi, a pocket-sized HD digital camera (and companion iOS app) designed specifically for capturing, streaming, and recording live events. The versatile camera is more like a full-blown network TV video production truck that fits in the palm of your hand.

The device has the potential for changing the way enterprises produce and deliver professional education training.

Movi lets you:

Edit while you record.

Track movement of specific people in the frame .

Pan and zoom remotely (using the iOS app interface; connected via the device’s on-board wi-fi or other available network).

With its “built in people detection, ” Movi can even making tracking and editing decisions automatically.

Access up to nine virtual HD cameras (all generated from the one device). This allows the user to cut between different camera angles…even though there is only one camera.

Store video locally with Movi’s built-in 16GB of storage.

With the Movi, small continuing education providers can stream and record high quality, professional-looking video with just one employee who is comfortable with the “pinch-to-zoom” technology of iOS devices.

Livetream is a Brooklyn, NY-based company that provides a platform for its customers to stream high resolution video of live events over the Internet. So, it’s no surprise, that Movi users can easily stream their event live with an optional Livestream subscription (starting at less than $9 per month), or share their final, edited via social networks (at no additional charge).

PC World is reporting battery life at approximately one hour of recording – reportedly extendable to up to 10 hours with an optional battery pack (that also serves to waterproof the Movi). Other reports set the price for this accessory at $150.

In a press release announcing the device, Livestream said Movi which will ship in early April at a retail price of $399. However, Movi is currently available for a limited time pre-order period at the discounted price of $200 at getmovi.com.
