Microsoft has released a free preview version of Office 2016 for Mac. The fully-functional preview software software is available for download. According to Microsoft, users of the preview will "receive regular updates automatically until the official release in the second half of 2015."

The suite boasts a redesigned ribbon that includes "your favorite cross-platform features and keyboard shortcuts," as well as additional features for Word, Powerpoint, Excel, One Note, and Outlook.

Some of the additional features include:

• Word - A new Design tab provides quick access to features and a new Format Object task pane gives you complete control over pictures, shapes, and effects.
• Powerpoint - New slide transitions, an improved Animations task pane, and an improved coauthoring experience, including threaded comments alongside your slides and the ability to visually compare version conflicts and confidently choose the right one to keep.
• Excel - A more consistent cross-platform experience, including keyboard shortcuts and many other functions familiar to Windows users. 
• Outlook - Online Archive support, category list sync, weather in calendar, apps for Office, and side-by-side calendar.

Wolfram Alpha has announced its Lawyer's Professional Assistant app for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. The app is $4.99 in the Apple iTunes App Store.

Features include:

• A dictionary of legal terms; statutes of limitations for each US state; and information about visa types, including requirements, common issues, and extensions and limits
• Calendar computations to quickly determine the end date of a specific term
• Financial computations, including fee calculations, settlement calculations, current interest rates, historical value of money, and federal US tax rates
• Crime rates and histories for specific crimes, as well as state and national average comparisons
• Demographics of population and economy for specific cities and international information about currency, country economies, and languages spoken, as well as time zone conversions
• Investigative information, including weather, company information, IP lookup, and blood alcohol calculator
• Damages and estate-planning computations for occupational salaries, costs of living, life expectancies, and present or future values
• Real estate law, including mortgage calculations, closing cost estimation, information on square footage, home sales price, and utility prices

Earlier this week Google announced an innovative new (automatic) filtering feature to its Gmail service to help users better organize their incoming messages and determine which should be read first - and which could wait. Named "Priority Inbox," Google described it as "a new view of your inbox that automatically helps you focus on your most important messages. Gmail has always kept spam messages out of your inbox, and now we’ve improved Gmail’s filter to help you see the emails that matter faster without requiring you to set up complex rules."

While there have been numerous reports about Priority Inbox in standard Gmail accounts. We have just seen Priority Inbox added to our branded Google Apps for domains e-mail accounts. Google Apps for domain administrators who want to make this, and other new features, available to users must select the "Enable pre-release features" in their domain administration control panel.

Priority Inbox rearranges your Inbox into three sections: Important and unread, Starred, and Everything else. During the (brief) set-up process it shows you a selection of e-mails already in your Inbox and asks you to prioritize them - Gmail uses this as a guide to prioritize all future incoming messages.

Out of the box, Priority Inbox does a fair job of categorizing incoming messages. To help it along, Google has added the plus and minus buttons at the top of the Inbox. Use these to increase or decrease the priority of any message in your Priority Inbox by checking the box to the left of the messages you want to change priority for and then clicking the appropriate (plus or minus) button.

You have to opt into the Priority Inbox (by clicking the red "New Priority Inbox (beta)" link at the top of your Inbox) before you can use it. Getting back to the "standard" view of your Inbox, is as easy as clicking the "Inbox" tab in the left hand column of the Gmail page.
