A five-judge panel will select 25 finalists from the submitted applications. 

On Jan. 17, 2023, descriptions of each of the 25 finalists will be posted on the ABA TECHSHOW blog, Above the Law, and LawSites where readers will be invited to vote for their favorites. The 15 startups that receive the most votes will be selected for the Startup Alley section of the TECHSHOW Expo Hall. Winners will be announced on Jan. 31.

This year's judges are:

The 15 finalists will face of in a live pitch competition during TECHSHOW’s opening night event. Each startup will have 2.5 minutes to present its pitch in front of an audience of TECHSHOW attendees. At the conclusion of the pitches, attendees will vote to select the most innovative company as the winner.

The winner of the opening night pitch competition will receive:

• Free 10×10 booth space at the 2024 TECHSHOW.
• Free 12-month listing on the ABA Legal Technology Resource Center’s Buyer’s Guide.
• $5,000 credit to use towards advertising in ABA Law Practice Division media.
• A profile of the company on Ambrogi's LawSites blog.

The Law Practice Division of the American Bar Association has opened registration for its 2023 TECHSHOW Conference and Expo.

The event will be held the first week of March, in Chicago, at the Hyatt Regency Chicago Hotel, 151 E Wacker Dr.

For nearly 30 years, the ABA TECHSHOW Conference and EXPO has been where lawyers, legal professionals, and technology all come together to learn about the most useful and practical technologies available. The event also includes a variety of CLE programming on related topics.

The Expo hall will feature over 100 legal techonology vendors demonstrating their products and services.

ABA TECHSHOW is seeking proposals for presentations on trends, techniques and specific tools that will help lawyers in firms of all sizes practice law more efficiently and effectively. This outreach is a continuation of TECHSHOW’s tradition of bringing together faculty to educate lawyers on the most current technology information that will be useful in their practice.

Speaker and topic proposals can be submitted online via the official RFP form at http://linkon.in/1pezBcF. Proposals will be accepted until midnight CDT on July 13.

ABA TECHSHOW’s goal in requesting submissions is to generate the largest possible pool of quality potential topics. Submission of a proposal is not a guarantee of an invitation to speak on the topic or that the topic will be selected.

Klau's earlier professional experience includes leadership roles at several software and Internet startups, but he is no stranger to the law or the ABA Law Practice Division. Klau was an early employee at FeedBurner, where he ran the publisher services team until Google acquired the company in 2007. Klau received dual degrees from Lafayette College, and while a student at the University of Richmond School of Law, he founded the Richmond Journal of Law & Technology, the world’s first student-edited law journal to publish exclusively online. He serves on Richmond Law’s Alumni Association Board of Directors. Klau was also one of the authors of the ABA Law Practice Division's book "The Lawyer's Guide to Marketing on the Internet."

Outside of his love of technology, Klau is also a political junkie. He has lent technology advice to three US Presidential campaigns, ran the campaign weblog for President Barack Obama in his 2004 Senate race, and ran product strategy for Google’s presence at the Democratic National Convention in 2008.

John W. Dean, White House Counsel to President Nixon, will deliver a plenary presentation at ABA TECHSHOW on Saturday, March 29. His presentation, titled "Nixon's Watergate Abuses: The Hackings That Forever Changed Legal Ethics," will focus on the inception of the modern Model Rules of Professional Conduct for lawyers more than three decades ago and their evolution over time, including recent amendments covering a lawyer’s duty to be familiar with ways technology can benefit their practice. The presentation will be followed by a question and answer session moderated by security product developers from Viivo, the file and cloud protection software sponsoring Dean’s appearance.

Dean was interviewed extensively for a recent ABA Journal article commemorating the 30^th anniversary of the ABA House of Delegates adopting the Model Rules of Professional conduct. The impetus, in part, for the ABA creating the Model Rules was the Watergate break-in and the large number of lawyers involved in the cover-up.

“In 1972, legal ethics boiled down to ‘don’t lie, don’t cheat, don’t steal and don’t advertise,’ ” says Dean. “When I took the elective course in ethics at law school, it was one-quarter of a credit. Legal ethics and professionalism played almost no role in any lawyer’s mind, including mine. Watergate changed that—for me and every other lawyer.

After Watergate, schools began to make legal ethics a required class. Bar examinations added an extra section on ethics. And nearly all states started requiring lawyers to attend annual continuing legal education programs focused on ethics and professional conduct.

...In 1977, the ABA created the Commission on Evaluation of Professional Standards, whose work led to the adoption of the Model Rules of Professional Conduct by the association’s policymaking House of Delegates in August 1983. The Model Rules replaced the Model Code of Professional Responsibility, which had been in effect since 1969."

“That’s one of the reasons we invited Dean to speak at TECHSHOW,” said Natalie Kelly, Chair of the 2014 ABA TECHSHOW Planning Board. “To address how ethics today not only involves substantive knowledge in the law (as it always has) but how that also now includes the ‘benefits and risks associated with relevant technology’ as the House of Delegates amended the Model Rules in August 2012.”

The presentation, open to registered ABA TECHSHOW attendees, is scheduled to take place at the Chicago Hilton Hotel from 8:30 – 10:00 AM. About John W. Dean

Before becoming Counsel to the President of the United States in July 1970, at age thirty-one, John  Dean was Chief Minority  Counsel to the Judiciary  Committee of the United  States House of Representatives, the Associate  Director of a law reform commission, and  Associate Deputy Attorney General of the United  States. He served as Richard Nixon’s White House counsel for a thousand days. Dean did his undergraduate studies at Colgate University and the College of Wooster, with majors in English Literature and Political  Science. He received a graduate fellowship from American University to study government and the presidency, before entering Georgetown University Law Center, where he received his JD in 1965.

For the past ten years Dean has been a visiting scholar (and lecturer) at the Annenberg School of Communications at the University of  Southern California. John writes on the subjects of law, government, and politics, and he recounted his days in the Nixon White House and Watergate in two books, Blind Ambition (1976) and Lost Honor  (1982). Since retiring from his career as a private investment banker at age 60, he has written a series of New York Times best sellers, a biweekly column for Justia.com, and is currently working  on his twelfth book, while regularly delivering  Continuing Legal Education programs throughout the country.
